Kentucky borders the Ohio River in the east-central part of the nation, one of America's four Commonwealth states. The official state title is the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Frankfort serves as the capital, although Louisville is the largest city and center of the state’s largest metropolitan statistical area. Louisville is situated in north-central Kentucky on the Kentucky-Indiana border at the only natural obstacle in the Ohio River—the Falls of the Ohio. The area surrounding the river is popularly known as Kentuckiana. Residents of Southern Indiana are only minutes away from the first-rate amenities and urban advantages of Louisville. Conversely, many who are employed in Metropolitan Louisville have settled into lovely small communities just across the Ohio River in Southern Indiana. Influenced by Midwestern and Southern culture, Louisville is often referred to as our nation's northernmost Southern city and southernmost Northern city.

CLIMATE

The climate of “Kentuckiana” and Central Kentucky is characterized by warm or hot summers and cool winters. Four beautiful, relatively mild, and distinct seasons create a kaleidoscope of changing scenery. Throughout the year, temperatures do not vary greatly from place to place. Temperatures below freezing are common throughout the state during winter, although extended periods of very cold weather do not occur every year. Participation tends to be dependable and evenly distributed throughout the seasons.
